The Israel Patent Office (Israeli Patent Office) is affiliated with the Israeli Ministry of Justice.  The Office handles issues related to intellectual property rights in Israel, including patentsdesigns, trademarks and appellations.

In September 2009, the Israel Patent Office was appointed by the Assembly of the PCT Union (International Patent Cooperation Union) as an International Searching Authority (ISA) and International Preliminary Examination Authority (IPEA).

The Office started operating as an ISA and IPEA under the Patent Cooperation Treaty on 1 June 2012.

Our firm stresses the importance of searches conducted both before and after filing the application.  In fact, applicants can request the Israel Patent Office to expedite the examination.  The expediting may include receiving a search report several months after filing.  Several times we have received a patent from the Office within a year.  Subsequently applications can be filed in other countries under the PPH  (Patent Prosecution Highway).  Israel is a party to the PPH scheme, see here.

The Israel Patent Office (ILPO) and USPTO signed a Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC) cooperation Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in April 2016.   ILPO started to classify their patent applications using CPC beginning September 1.

CPC is used by more than 45 patent offices globally for classification search since its launch by the USPTO and the European Patent Office (EPO) on January 1, 2013.

Together with private practitioners the Israel Patent Office spearheaded the 2017 Design Law.

As of 17 July 2017, The Israel Patent Office (ILPO) has joined TMclass.

TMclass offers users the opportunity to search and translate goods and services to and from any of the 42 available languages, with Hebrew as the latest incorporation.
